The Vedas

What are the Vedas?
“The word Veda means “Supreme Knowledge” or “Divine Knowledge”.

Vedas refers to all kinds of Vedic literature, such as the four Vedas: Sama, Yajur, Rg and Atharva and the Bhagavad-Gita, the eighteen Puranas, the Upanishads, the Vedanta-sutra and the historical epics called the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The above mentioned four Vedas i.e. Sama, Yajur, Rg andAtharva are arranged in the succession of their importance because Sama Veda is the most important of all. The Sama Veda is considered to be the most important because it is rich with beautiful songs played by the various demigods. One of the most important of these songs is the Brihat-sama, which has an exquisite melody and is sung at midnight; and among all the poetries or hymns in the Sama Veda, the Gayatri mantra, which is chanted by duly qualified Brahmans, is the most prominent. Parts of the Vedas are the 108 Upanishads, out of which eleven are very important. Of those eleven, theIsopanishad stands first. In the word Upanishad, upa means “near”. So the knowledge in theUpanishads, especially the Isopanishad will take you nearer to God. For elucidation, the four Vedas are explained in the historical epics called the Ramayana and the Mahabharata and in the eighteenPuranas. The Vedanta-sutra represents the cream of the Vedas. The Bhagavad-Gita is the preliminary explanation of the Vedanta-sutras. So the Bhagavad-Gita is considered to be creamy layer of theVedas and the highest and the mightiest of all the books that are present on this earth and this Universe.

There is no knowledge comparable to that contained in the Vedic literature not only spiritual knowledge, but material knowledge also. The Vedas discuss astronomy, mathematics, and may other subjects. The science of face reading and body reading is just a small portion of the vast metaphysical knowledge contained in the Vedic literature. It is not that in ancient times there were no airplanes. They are mentioned in the Puranas. These airplanes were so strong and swift that they could easily reach other planets. So even the material knowledge was very advanced in the Vedic age however the people then considered spiritual knowledge far above material knowledge, henceforth they did not consider material knowledge and material gains so important.
